Since the reopening of Bruichladdich by the independent bottler Murray McDavid in 2000 - and especially under the direction of Jim McEwan - the distillery and its whiskey shine like never before.
Jim McEwan - born on Islay and formerly master distiller at Bowmore - made a return to the original and natural in making Scottish whiskey.
For this reason, all bottlings of Bruichladdich are not filtered cool and without dyes.
Bruichladdich 1986 Fresh Sherry Cask no. 531
This vintage bottling matured for 21 years in a fresh sherry cask.
In the nose, first fresh pear, apple and gooseberry, separated from raisins, dates, honey and nuts, covered in sweet sherry.
The addition of water arouses aromas of nougat, honeydew melon and mild spices.
On the palate, first warm spices and mature Spanish oak, then merge the sherry aromas with green grapes and the typical Islay flavors.
There are also traces of blackberries, toffee and liquorice.
Finally, at the peak, dark chocolate and crispy-malted barley.
In the finish peppery and sweet this malt is simply divine.
On the label is a photo of Stillman Ruaridh Macleod, taken in Stillhouse.
Ruaridh Macleod was 1986 Stillman with Bruichladdich and burned this malt at that time.
